The Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area (PHALGA), Sir (Hon.) Allwell Ihunda DSSRS, JP, has continued to receive widespread commendation for his people-centered leadership as more than 3,000 residents have benefited from the ongoing free medical outreach programme organized by the council.
The four-day healthcare intervention, held at the Port Harcourt City Council Secretariat, has recorded remarkable success, providing thousands of residents with access to quality medical services at no cost.
The initiative, which commenced on April 21, 2026, was designed to serve over 5,000 residents across Port Harcourt City and neighboring communities, reflecting the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare access and promoting the well-being of citizens.
Speaking during the exercise, Mayor Ihunda emphasized that good health remains a critical pillar for productivity, economic growth, and sustainable development.
According to reports from the medical team coordinating the outreach, more than 3,000 residents have already received various forms of medical care, including consultations, diagnosis, treatment, medication, eye care services, and surgical interventions.
One of the major highlights of the programme has been its impact on surgical and vision care. Medical officials confirmed that 45 successful surgical operations have so far been carried out, providing life-changing relief to beneficiaries who previously lacked the financial means to access such healthcare services.
In addition, 102 patients were recommended for eye surgeries during a single morning session, underscoring the growing demand and effectiveness of the programme’s eye care component.
The outreach has also restored hope and improved vision for hundreds of residents, with over 700 pairs of prescription eyeglasses distributed free of charge, while registration and medical assessments continue to increase daily.
Mayor Ihunda assured residents that individuals requiring specialized medical attention beyond the scope of the outreach would be referred to appropriate government health facilities, with the council exploring ways to support those facing financial constraints.
He maintained that access to healthcare should not be determined by economic status, stressing that the outreach reflects his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and social welfare.
“No resident should be denied quality healthcare because of financial challenges.
Our responsibility is to ensure that the people have access to services that improve their lives and well-being,” the Mayor stated.
Beyond healthcare, Mayor Ihunda highlighted several other interventions being implemented by his administration, including the clearing and desilting of flood-prone areas, renovation of public primary schools, empowerment grants for women, Ramadan support programmes, and the execution of constituency projects across various wards in the local government area.
The success of the outreach has also been attributed to the dedication of medical professionals drawn from council health facilities, the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board, and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), whose commitment ensured smooth and efficient service delivery throughout the programme.
Residents who benefited from the initiative expressed gratitude to the Mayor and the council for bringing healthcare closer to the people, describing the programme as timely, impactful, and life-changing.
As the outreach concludes with a special appreciation luncheon, many stakeholders have described it as one of the most significant healthcare interventions undertaken by a local government administration in recent times, reinforcing Mayor Allwell Ihunda’s reputation as a leader committed to improving the lives of the people.
