In a determined effort to uplift the standard of education within Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, the Mayor of Port Harcourt City LGA, Sir (Hon.) Allwell Ihunda , DSSRS, JP, on Monday, 24th November 2025, embarked on a final assessment tour of two public schools: Township School, Moscow Road, and State School, Elekahia, (UBE Primary)
The Mayor, who was accompanied by the Chairman, Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB), Hon. Sam Ogeh, expressed deep concern over the deplorable state of the facilities and the alarming level of vandalism and theft recorded.
Sir Ihunda condemned the unfortunate situation that has forced pupils to learn in an unconducive and unsafe environment, noting that such conditions negatively impact their learning, concentration, and overall academic performance.
He announced that contractors have been directed to mobilize to site immediately to commence full renovation works on the dilapidated structures. The Mayor further appealed to the school heads and teachers to temporarily adjust and accommodate pupils in the few classrooms where facilities are still intact. This, he explained, will allow contractors to carry out comprehensive renovation without disrupting the academic calendar.
Responding, Hon. Sam Ogeh assured the Mayor of the Boardβs readiness to collaborate closely with the Council to ensure swift, quality, and timely delivery of the rehabilitation project. He commended the Mayor for his unwavering commitment to improving basic education across the LGA.
The Port Harcourt City Local Government Council reiterates its resolve to restore conducive learning environments and ensure that every child has access to safe, functional, and well-equipped schools.
