Mayor of Portharcourt City Hon Victor Ihunwo JP has performed the foundation laying ceremony for the construction of Portharcourt city market, Rumuwoji.
The Mayor said the market is built to help curb the menace of street trading in the diobu axis of the city and is designed to function 24hours everyday if the need arises.
Hon Victor Ihunwo said his administration in Portharcourt is committed to complement the efforts of Gov Nyesom Wike in his quest to return Portharcourt to its Garden city status.
Gov Nyesom Wike has constructed an international market in Rumuwoji community that will serve the entire state,all the traders may not be accommodated in that market hence the need for the council to construct this Portharcourt city market to complement the international market and help in curbing the menace of street trading.
Hon Victor Ihunwo urged the contractor to make judicious use of the funds he has made available while ensuring that members of the community are carried along in the construction of the market.
He warned that he will not tolerate a situation where any person of group of persons attempt to disrupt the job of the contractor, he will ensure that person or group of persons is made to face the full weight of the law.
“Since I came on board in 2018,council allocation from the federation account gets to us untampered.Gov Nyesom Wike has never tampered with council allocation under my watch,that’s why we are committed to prudent management of council funds and embark on projects that will have direct benefit to our people, just as our Governor does for our state.
The Portharcourt city market when completed will have over 50 lock up shops that will be allocated to only genuine traders by the council.
