MAYOR OF PORTHARCOURT CITY INTERACTS WITH STAFF OF THE COUNCIL.
…Inaugurates staff audit committee.
Mayor of Portharcourt City Hon Victor Ihunwo JP, today in the council secretariat interacted with members of staff of the council and subsequently inaugurated a staff audit committee to properly document all members of staff of the council.
The Mayor said the council has the highest staff strength amongst the 23 Local government councils in the state. He frowned at the attitude of some members of staff to work.
He told the workers that as chairman of council he does not absent himself from work, he resumes at 9am daily and closes at 5pm a fact that no member of staff could dispute.
He wondered why workers derive joy in absenting themselves from work but are always eager to get paid at the end of the month.
“Some of you here will say I am not the first chairman, that chairmen will come and go but you will remain as staff, but I can assure you that I am determined to set a precedence in my time here as chairman of this council”. The Mayor said.
The Mayor said the attendance register he opened for members of staff to sign in and out of work is not to witch hunt anyone, but its a measure he has set out to fish out ghost workers and reduce the already bloated wage bill of the council.
Some members of staff led by the Chairman of their union Mrs Chinwe Eddeh appealed to the Mayor to extend their arrival time from 9am to 10am and also allow them come to work at least three times in a week, because some of them come from very far distances.
Another staff of the Agriculture department Mr Chimbiko Nmerukini appealed to the Mayor to create a farm for the council so staff of the department can start farming to generate more revenue for the council.
Responding The Mayor told the workers that he will not extend the time for resumption for duty, but will ensure that the attendance register is not closed until the last person on the queue signs.
The Mayor inaugurated a staff audit committee and saddled them with the responsibility of ensuring that all members of staff of the council are properly documented and turn in their report after two weeks.
